につれてAs one thing changes, another changes with it
につれて links two developments: as A progresses or changes, B changes along with it. The changes may move in the same direction or in opposite directions.
Two developments must be present
Think of A and B as two variables observed across several points. A changes first in the sentence, and B tracks that progression. This does not merely mean “after A”; both sides need to support gradual or repeated development.
Changes moving together
The first part supplies the advancing process, while the second describes the accompanying change.
The directions do not have to match
B does not have to increase when A increases. It may decrease, improve, worsen, broaden, or change in another gradual way, provided that it tracks A.
気温の上昇につれて、暖房の使用量は減っていく。
As temperatures rise, the amount of heating used decreases.
AnalyzeHere A increases while B decreases. What matters is the connection between the two developments, not their direction.
Nearby change patterns
につれて is a neutral way to track two changing developments. にしたがって is somewhat more formal and often suggests a more orderly progression. に伴って is more formal and is especially useful for broader consequences accompanying a change or event. The pattern ば～ほど states an explicit proportional relationship by repeating the graded word, rather than simply presenting A as a progressing process.
