たりしてMaybe do ... or something

Lightly offers an action as one possible idea or playfully floats something that might happen. It often feels like “maybe ... or something,” without making a firm suggestion or claim.

Leaving one possibility open

The action is presented as just one example among other unstated possibilities. At the end of a sentence, the unfinished, open-ended feeling can make a guess sound uncertain, a suggestion sound less forceful, or an unlikely idea sound playful.

A soft suggestion

A

What should we do this weekend?

Analyze
B

Maybe go to a nearby hot spring or something.

Analyze

B offers one idea without pushing it as a definite plan.

Playful and uncertain possibilities

Context tells you whether the speaker is joking or making a genuine but uncertain guess.

Maybe I’ll win first prize in tomorrow’s drawing or something.

Analyze

The unlikely possibility is floated playfully.

Tanaka still isn’t here. Maybe he got on the wrong train or something.

Analyze

This is an uncertain explanation, not a firm conclusion.

One floating example or a complete list

Sentence-final たりして can leave one possibility hanging suggestively. By contrast, the full pattern たり~たりする lists two or more representative actions as things someone does or did.

On my days off, I do things like read books and watch movies.

Analyze

This is a regular list of representative activities, not a playful sentence-final possibility.
