のでBecause; since

ので gives a reason as background that naturally explains the following result, decision, apology, or request. It is common in both conversation and writing and often sounds less direct than other basic ways of saying “because.”

How it works

The reason comes first, followed by ので and the result or response it explains. The speaker normally presents the first part as relevant background rather than pushing it as a forceful personal justification.

Reasons with different word types

The train was delayed, so I did not make it to the meeting on time.

Analyze

This room is quiet, so I can study well here.

Analyze

An affirmative nonpast na-adjective takes before ので.

Since today is a day off, I will get up a little later.

Analyze

Giving background for a request

It is cold, so please close the window.

Analyze

ので makes the request follow naturally from the situation instead of presenting the reason too forcefully.

Background reason or direct justification

ので often packages the reason as background, while から more readily foregrounds the speaker’s own reason or assertion. This is a tendency, not a rule that one is always objective and the other always subjective.

I am not feeling well, so I will leave early today.

Analyze

The reason is presented as background for the decision.

I am not feeling well, so I will leave early today.

Analyze

This can sound more like the speaker is directly stating or asserting the reason.
