命令 (meirei) is a strong, authoritative order, often from a superior. 指示 (shiji) is a softer instruction or direction, common in workplaces. Use 指示 for everyday instructions.

English often uses 'command' as a verb (e.g., 'He commanded them to stop'). In Japanese, it's more natural to use specific verbs like 命じる (meijiru) or 指示する (shiji suru), or simply use the imperative form.
