The English verb "discuss" covers a range of communication, from casual conversation to formal debate. Japanese uses different words depending on the formality, depth, and purpose of the discussion.

General verb for 'talk' or 'speak'. When used with について (about), it means 'discuss' in a broad sense. Less formal than 話し合う.

In English, 'discuss' does not take 'about' (we say 'discuss the problem', not 'discuss about the problem'). In Japanese, you often need について (about) when using verbs like 話す or 議論する. Do not omit the particle.

話し合う implies a cooperative exchange to reach mutual understanding, while 議論する can involve debate or argument. Use 話し合う for friendly discussions and 議論する for formal or contentious ones.
彼は自分の意見を述べた。
He discussed his opinion.
