挿入 (そうにゅう) is formal and often used for precise insertion into slots or in technical contexts. 差し込む (さしこむ) implies pushing in, like a plug or key. 入れる (いれる) is the most general 'put in' and can be used for many insertion scenarios, but may sound too casual in technical writing.
English often uses 'insertion' as a noun for the process or the thing inserted. In Japanese, it's more natural to use a verb phrase or a compound noun like 挿入物 (そうにゅうぶつ) for the object. Using 挿入 alone as a noun can be ambiguous.
Insert a note in the margin.
Insert contact lenses into the eyes.
