sutra, longitude, pass thru, expire, warp
経 centers on a thread-like line that runs through or along something: a warp thread in weaving, a meridian of longitude, or the passage of time. The sutra sense extends this to a guiding thread of teaching, and 'expire' comes from time passing through.
経 is the modern simplified form of 經. The older form combines 糸 (thread) with 巠, which likely contributed the sound and the idea of a vertical thread or line. The modern right side 圣 is a simplification.
The left side is thread 糸, and the right side 圣 looks like a vertical line with a cross mark. Picture a warp thread running straight through a loom, like a meridian line on a map.
For ケイ, imagine a long thread passing through a key-shaped hole in a loom: key -> ケイ, and the thread runs straight like a warp.
