flock, group, crowd, herd, swarm, cluster
群 centers on a gathering of living things: a flock of birds, a herd of animals, a crowd of people, or a cluster of similar items. The idea is many individuals coming together as one group.
群 combines 君 (lord, ruler) and 羊 (sheep). The traditional explanation is that a lord gathers and leads a flock of sheep, giving the idea of a group or herd.
A lord (君) stands beside his sheep (羊), gathering them into a flock. Together they form a group, herd, or crowd.
For グン, imagine a group of sheep being herded by a lord who shouts 'Goon!' to keep them together: Goon -> グン.
