Munchausen's syndrome
A psychiatric disorder in which a person repeatedly feigns or induces physical or psychological symptoms to assume the sick role. Medical term; also known as factitious disorder imposed on self.
Patients with Munchausen's syndrome may fabricate symptoms themselves.
Named after Baron Munchausen, a literary character known for telling exaggerated stories. The term was adopted into medical usage in the 20th century.
