the five home provinces and seven districts of ancient Japan
Historical term referring to the administrative division system used from the Asuka to early Meiji periods. The five home provinces (五畿) are Yamato, Yamashiro, Kawachi, Settsu, and Izumi; the seven circuits (七道) are Tōkaidō, Tōsandō, Hokurikudō, San'indō, San'yōdō, Nankaidō, and Saikaidō.
The Gokishichidō is the regional administrative division of ancient Japan.
律令制のもとで、国は五畿七道に分けられていた。
Under the Ritsuryō system, the provinces were divided into the Gokishichidō.
