Kitatama era
Sumo term for the period around the late 1960s to early 1970s when grand champions Kitanofuji and Tamanoumi dominated. Used in historical or sumo commentary contexts.
The Kitatama era is considered one of the golden ages of professional sumo.
Compound of the first kanji of the grand champions' shikona: 北 (from 北の富士 Kitanofuji) and 玉 (from 玉の海 Tamanoumi), plus 時代 (era).
