Military title for the highest-ranking officer in a general staff. In Japanese contexts, often refers to the Imperial Japanese Army's 参謀総長; in modern contexts, may refer to the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or equivalent. Compare with 参謀長 (さんぼうちょう), which is a lower-level chief of staff.
