godan verb (-ru), transitive verb
Used when someone in a position of authority (parent, teacher, boss) verbally admonishes someone for doing something wrong. Stronger than 注意する but not as harsh as 怒鳴る.
母は私が嘘をついたのでしかった。
My mother scolded me because I told a lie.
The teacher scolded the student who was late.
The teacher scolded the student.
I was scolded for being late.
My father scolded me severely.
My mother scolded me loudly.
叱る means to scold or reprimand with a corrective intent, while 罵る is purely abusive shouting with no constructive purpose.
叱る is the everyday word for scolding someone, as between parent and child, while 戒める carries a more principled or moral sense of admonishment.
叱る is the plain, general verb for scolding, while 絞る (often passive, as in 油を絞られる) implies a particularly severe dressing-down.
scold harshly; tell off; bawl out
