upstage right (noh stage)
Rare technical term in noh theater; refers to the position on the stage where an actor announces their name and lineage. Contrasts with 常座 (upstage left).

On the noh stage, the nanoriza is opposite the jōza.
常座 is upstage left, the usual position for the shite; 名乗り座 is upstage right, used for self-introductions.
From 名乗り (nanori, 'self-introduction') + 座 (za, 'seat, position'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term is specific to noh theater staging.
