Proverbial expression: lending a small favor (the eaves) only to have one's entire house taken. Used when a small kindness is exploited or returned with harm. Sense 2 (favor returned with spite) is a natural extension of the same core idea.
I helped him just a little, and like 'lending the eaves and having the whole house taken,' he ended up pushing everything onto me.
善意で注意したのに、逆に怒鳴られるなんて、まさに庇を貸して母屋を取られるだ。
I gave him a friendly warning, but he yelled at me in return—truly a case of 'give an inch and they take a mile.'
