Often used with a disease as the object, as in 病気を患う or 心臓病を患う. It can also be used intransitively for being ill over a period of time. Somewhat more written or serious-sounding than simply 病気になる.
彼は若いころから心臓病を患っている。
He has suffered from heart disease since he was young.
