karuna (compassion)
Buddhist term for compassion, one of the four Brahmaviharas. Rarely used outside Buddhist contexts.
In Buddhism, 悲 means deep compassion for all living beings.

The kanji 悲 means 'sadness' or 'sorrow' in general Japanese, but in this Buddhist context it specifically translates the Sanskrit term karuṇā (compassion).
