Only when written 新選
Obsolete term; historically used for someone newly elected or returned to office. Restricted to the 新選 spelling.
明治時代の資料には「新選議員」という表現が見られる。
In Meiji-era documents, the expression 'newly elected assembly member' can be found.
Also means 'new compilation', but 新編 is more common in modern book titles and lacks the obsolete 'elected' sense.
