Archaic noun for something morally or legally wrong, unpleasant, or disastrous. Rare in modern Japanese; preserved mainly in historical or literary contexts.
In old documents it is written, 'You must not commit wrongdoing.'
The exact derivation is uncertain. The kanji 曲 (bent, wrong) and 事 (thing, matter) suggest 'a bent matter', i.e., something not straight or right.
