Historical term referring to people who migrated from the continent to Japan during the Kofun and Asuka periods (roughly 4th–7th centuries), bringing advanced culture, technology, and political systems.
It is said that the toraijin introduced kanji and Buddhism to Japan.
The toraijin of the Kofun period were also skilled in civil engineering.
Compound of 渡来 (torai, 'coming from overseas') + 人 (jin, 'person'). The term is a modern historiographical label for ancient immigrants.
