A noun referring to a white person or people categorized as white. It is a neutral descriptive term in many contexts, but because it refers to race or ethnicity it should be used with appropriate care.

Archaic use corresponding to modern 素人, meaning a beginner or non-professional. In contemporary Japanese, 白人 is normally understood as 'white person', so this meaning is mainly of historical or dictionary interest.
