journey of the gods to Izumo Grand Shrine

In Shinto belief, the gods travel to the Grand Shrine of Izumo in the tenth month of the lunar calendar, which is called 神無月 (month without gods) elsewhere and 神在月 (month with gods) in Izumo.

• 旧きゅう暦れき十じゅう月がつは神かみの旅たびの時じ期きとされ、出雲いずも大たい社しゃに全ぜん国こくの神かみ々がみが集あつまると伝つたえられる。

  The tenth month of the old calendar is considered the time of the journey of the gods, and it is said that gods from all over Japan gather at Izumo Grand Shrine.
