Historical term for a cannon mounted on the side of a warship, used in the age of sail and early steam navies.
This warship was equipped with many broadside guns.
Compound of 舷側 (gensoku, 'ship's side') + 砲 (hō, 'cannon'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term reflects the placement of guns along the side of a vessel.
