Tokugawa branch domain
Historical term for a feudal domain (han) ruled by a branch family of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period.
Shinpan were domains governed by branches of the Tokugawa family.
The Mito domain was one of the shinpan.
外様 were domains held by daimyo who submitted to the Tokugawa after the Battle of Sekigahara, contrasting with the trusted 親藩.
