noun
Often used in the phrase せん方ない (there is no way, it can't be helped). Similar to 仕方 (しかた), but somewhat literary or old-fashioned.
See also: 仕方
こうなってはもうせん方ない。
Now that it has come to this, there is nothing we can do.
彼はせん方なく、その場を去った。
Having no other choice, he left the place.
仕方 is the common, everyday word for 'way' or 'method'. せん方 is a literary variant, often used in the set phrase せん方ない.
The historical derivation is uncertain. The kanji 詮 is ateji, and 為ん方 is a rarely used kanji form. The word is conventionally associated with the meaning 'way' or 'method'.
