disposition of troops; battle formation
Archaic military term referring to the arrangement or formation of troops before battle. Not used in modern Japanese outside historical contexts.
Documents from the Warring States period record the importance of troop dispositions.
Compound of 陣 (jin, 'camp' or 'battle array') and 備え (sonae, 'preparation' or 'provision'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term is attested in pre-modern military writings.
