Humble expression used when the speaker meets or will meet a person of higher status, such as a teacher, boss, or customer. Often used in formal greetings and introductions.

Archaic humble usage meaning to be noticed or recognized by a superior, or simply to be visible. Not used in modern Japanese outside of historical or literary contexts.

• 古ふるい文ぶん書しょでは、「お目めにかかる」が「認みとめられる」の意いで使つかわれることがある。

  In old documents, お目にかかる can be used to mean 'to be recognized'.
