Humble expression used when the speaker meets or is granted an audience with a superior, customer, or respected person. Often used in the form お目にかかる.

Archaic passive-like sense meaning to be seen or noticed, especially by someone of higher status. Rare in modern Japanese; the humble meeting sense is dominant.

• 古ふるい文ぶん書しょでは「目めにかかる」が「認みとめられる」の意いで使つかわれることがある。

  In old documents, 目にかかる can be used to mean 'to be recognized'.
