Casual, spoken-sounding verb for making a mistake or failing at something, often with a nuance of personal blame or clumsiness. More colloquial than 失敗する.

• 大だい事じな場ば面めんでしくじった。

  I messed up at an important moment.

• 試し験けんでしくじって、第だい一いち志し望ぼうに落おちた。

  I failed on the exam and did not get into my first-choice school.

Less common use meaning to lose one's position or job because of a mistake or misconduct. Often appears in phrases such as 会社をしくじる or 勤めをしくじる.

• 彼かれは無む断だん欠けっ勤きんを繰くり返かえして、とうとう会かい社しゃをしくじった。

  After repeatedly being absent without notice, he finally lost his job.
