or rather; I mean; how should I put it

Used to rephrase or correct what one has just said, often in casual conversation. Similar to と言うか but more colloquial.

• あの店みせ、高たかいっていうか、値ね段だんに見み合あってないんだよね。

  That shop is expensive—or rather, the prices aren't worth it.

• 彼かれは優やさしいっていうか、甘あますぎるんだよ。

  He's kind—I mean, he's too soft.

Used to change the subject or introduce a related topic in casual speech. Less common than the rephrasing use.

• ていうか、昨日きのうの話はなしだけどさ、結けっ局きょくどうなったの？

  By the way, about what we talked about yesterday—what ended up happening?
