Attaches to the negative stem (nai-form) of a verb to mean 'without doing that action'. Used in both spoken and written Japanese.

• 朝あさごはんを食たべないで学がっ校こうに行いった。

  I went to school without eating breakfast.

• 傘かさを持もたないで出でかけてしまった。

  I ended up going out without taking an umbrella.

don't

Used at the end of a sentence as a soft, indirect prohibition. Often heard in casual speech, especially from women or when speaking to children. Less direct than ～な.

• そんなに急いそがないで。

  Don't be in such a hurry.

• ここで写しゃ真しんを撮とらないで。

  Please don't take pictures here.
