intermediate wall coating mix
Technical term in traditional Japanese plastering. Refers to the mixture of clay, straw, and other materials applied as the middle layer of a wall, between the rough base coat (荒壁土) and the final finish coat.

Nakanuri-tsuchi is the second layer of wall plaster applied over the rough base coat.
In traditional earthen walls, straw is mixed into the intermediate coating to increase strength.
Compound of 中塗り (nakanuri, 'intermediate coating') + 土 (tsuchi, 'earth, soil'). The term is transparently derived from its components.
