Formal or written expression indicating that a situation has been settled or has come about, often as a result of prior deliberation or natural consequence. Similar to ことになる but slightly more formal.

• 来らい月げつから東とう京きょう支し社しゃに転てん勤きんすることとなりました。

  It has been decided that I will be transferred to the Tokyo branch from next month.

• 協きょう議ぎの結けっ果か、計けい画かくは延えん期きすることとなった。

  As a result of discussions, it was decided that the plan would be postponed.
