In the old Japanese temporal hour system, the day was divided into twelve periods, each named after an animal. 八つ corresponded to approximately 2 a.m. or 2 p.m., depending on the season. This usage is now historical.

• 江え戸ど時じ代だいには、八やつ時どきにおやつを食たべる習しゅう慣かんがあった。

  In the Edo period, there was a custom of eating a snack at the hour of the 'yatsu' (around 2 p.m.).
