Literary and historical term referring to a defensive or symbolic arrangement of layered fences, often appearing in classical poetry and mythology. Not used in everyday modern Japanese.

• 古こ事じ記きには、八や重え垣がきを作つくる場ば面めんが描えがかれている。

  In the Kojiki, there is a scene where multiple layers of fences are built.

• 和わ歌かで「八や重え垣がき」は、幾いく重えにも巡めぐらされた垣かき根ねのイメージで詠よまれることがある。

  In waka poetry, 'yaegaki' is sometimes used with the image of fences layered many times over.
