Transitive Godan verb for removing something stuck to, covering, or attached to a surface. It is used for labels, posters, coatings, skin, bark, and similar things; it does not usually mean a general electrical or abstract 'disconnect' unless something is physically being detached.
ビンのラベルをゆっくりはがした。
I slowly peeled the label off the bottle.
壁から古いポスターをはがす。
Peel the old poster off the wall.
魚の皮をはがしてから焼く。
Remove the fish skin before grilling it.

Forceful extension of the stripping sense, especially in expressions such as 身ぐるみはがす or 身ぐるみはがされる, meaning to strip someone of everything. For official deprivation of rights or status, other words such as 剥奪する are normally more natural.
詐欺師に身ぐるみはがされた。
He was stripped of everything by a con artist.
I peeled the poster off the wall.
The con artist stripped him of everything he had.
I peeled the sticker off the product neatly.
剥奪する is the formal term for officially stripping someone of rights or status, while 剥がす in this sense is used more casually, as in 身ぐるみをはがす.
はがす means to carefully peel off something that is stuck on, like tape or a sticker, while 捲る (めくる) in its tearing sense implies a rougher, quicker pulling or flipping action.
Kanji form with the uncommon attested reading へがす; normally read はがす.
Rare variant kanji form using 剝 instead of 剥.
Irregular okurigana spelling marked; useful to recognize but not recommended for learners.
Attested alternate reading and kana spelling; much less common than はがす.
