Traditional lined paper with a square grid, one square per character, used for Japanese writing practice and manuscript submission.
I bought genkō yōshi to write a novel.
Japanese compositions are often written vertically on genkō yōshi.
Usage patterns

I wrote my composition on manuscript paper.
- 原稿用紙〈数〉枚a certain number of sheets of manuscript paper
I submitted a report that was five sheets of manuscript paper long.
