Expresses a feeling of not wanting to do something, often because it is troublesome, unpleasant, or burdensome. Used for activities, environments, or situations one would rather avoid. Somewhat literary or formal; in casual speech 嫌がる or 嫌だ are more common.

• 彼かれは面めん倒どうな仕し事ごとを厭いとう。

  He is reluctant to do troublesome work.

• 彼かの女じょは人ひと付づき合あいを厭いとわない。

  She doesn't shun socializing with people.

Rare, archaic usage meaning to care for someone or something attentively. In modern Japanese, 世話をする or 大事にする are used instead. Found mainly in classical texts.

  In classical Japanese, 子を厭う can mean 'to raise a child with great care'.
