Wedded Rocks; husband-and-wife rocks
A pair of rocks, one larger and one smaller, connected by a sacred rope, symbolizing a married couple. Often found at Shinto shrines; the most famous example is at Futami Okitama Shrine in Mie Prefecture.
On the way to Ise Shrine, we visited the Wedded Rocks.
The Wedded Rocks consist of a large rock and a small rock tied together with a sacred rope.
Formed from 夫婦, read めおと, and 岩, “rock,” for a pair of rocks regarded as husband and wife.
