Archaic term for the top of a mountain; replaced in modern Japanese by 山頂 (さんちょう) or 頂上 (ちょうじょう).

• 古ふるい和わ歌かでは「嶺れい上じょうの雪ゆき」のように詠よまれることがある。

  In old waka poems, it is sometimes used as in 'snow on the mountain top'.
