Used almost exclusively before nouns referring to time, especially 日 (day), 朝 (morning), 年 (year), etc. It is a pre-noun adjectival (rentaishi) and cannot stand alone.
The next day, he woke up early.
The following morning, snow had piled up.
Usage patterns
- 明くる日the next day
He set off early the next day.
- 明くる朝the following morning
By the following morning, the rain had already stopped.
- 明くる年the following year
They got married the following year.
