Don't confuse with 描き下ろし (same pronunciation, different kanji) refers to artwork or illustrations drawn specially for a work, while 書き下ろし refers to text (a novel, script, etc.) written specially for it.
書き直し means a rewrite or revision of existing text, whereas 書き下ろし means an entirely new work written from scratch for a specific release.
