Used mainly for undesirable things spreading or occurring unchecked, such as crime, corruption, false information, or bad practices. Often appears as 横行する or 横行している.

Literal or older use based on 横に行く, describing sideways movement, an unsteady gait, or striding. Much less common than the figurative 'rampant' sense in modern Japanese.

• カニは横おう行こうする動どう物ぶつとして知しられる。

  Crabs are known as animals that walk sideways.

• 古ふるい表ひょう現げんの「横おう行こう闊かっ歩ぽ」は、威い張ばって大おおまたに歩あるく様よう子すを表あらわす。

  The old expression 横行闊歩 describes someone striding about arrogantly.
