Usage patterns

• あいにくの〈事こと〉unfortunate (weather, timing, circumstances, etc.)

  あいにくの雨あめで、ピクニックは中ちゅう止しになった。

  Unfortunately, because of the rain, the picnic was cancelled.

• あいにく〈人ひと〉は〈場ば所しょ〉に〈動どう詞し〉unfortunately, [person] is not at [place]

  あいにく部ぶ長ちょうは席せきにおりません。

  I'm sorry, but the manager isn't at his desk right now.

• あいにくですが、〈事こと〉unfortunately, ... (used to soften bad news or a refusal)

  あいにくですが、その日ひは予よ定ていが入はいっております。

  I'm afraid I already have plans that day.
