Literary and somewhat archaic verb meaning to feel mutual pity or compassion. The prefix 相 (あい) indicates reciprocity. Rare in modern conversation; more common in classical or poetic contexts.

• 彼かれらは互たがいの不ふ幸こうを相あい憐あわれんだ。

  They commiserated with each other over their misfortunes.

• 戦せん争そうの時じ代だい、人ひと々びとはただ相あい憐あわれむことしかできなかった。
