Used for supernatural curses, vengeful spirits, or divine punishment that brings misfortune or illness. Often appears in the passive form 祟られる.

Figurative extension: past actions or decisions come back to cause trouble, like a curse. Often used with ～が祟って or ～が祟りとなって.

• 若わかい頃ころの不ふ摂せっ生せいが祟たたって、今いまは病びょう気きがちだ。
