Refers to a statute or law that forbids a particular act, product, trade, etc. Often used after the thing being banned, as in 取引の禁止法, or in compounds naming specific laws.
象牙取引の禁止法が可決された。
A law banning the ivory trade was passed.

This prohibitory law bans smoking in public places.
