A legal term referring to a person who has been adjudicated incompetent and placed under a guardian. This term was used under the old Civil Code; the current term is 成年被後見人 (seinen hikōken'nin).
禁治産の宣告を受けた者は、法律行為を単独で行うことができない。
A person who has been declared incompetent cannot perform legal acts on their own.
Under the old Civil Code, a guardian was appointed for an incompetent person.
A compound of 禁 (prohibit, restrict), 治 (govern, manage), and 産 (property, assets), referring to the restriction of a person's ability to manage their own property. The term is now obsolete in modern Japanese law.
