olfactory cell
A sensory cell responsible for detecting odors; synonymous with 嗅細胞 (きゅうさいぼう). Used in biological and medical contexts.

Olfactory cells are located in the olfactory epithelium deep inside the nasal cavity.
Compound of 臭 (しゅう, 'smell, odor') + 細胞 (さいぼう, 'cell'). The kanji 臭 is sometimes used interchangeably with 嗅 for olfactory senses, though 嗅 is more specific to the act of smelling.
