chromatophore
A biological term for a pigment-containing cell or organelle, such as those found in the skin of cephalopods, fish, and amphibians, or in plants and algae.
The chromatophores of squid can change color to match the surrounding environment.
Compound of 色素 (shikiso, 'pigment') and 体 (tai, 'body'). The term is a calque from German 'Chromatophor' or English 'chromatophore', used in biology since the late 19th century.
